The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

7 — The Man Behind the Screen
The friends came back to the Emerald City. Oz did not want to see them, but at last he let them in. They stood in the empty room and heard a voice. Then Toto knocked over a screen in the corner. Behind it stood a little old man with a bald head. "I am Oz," he said quietly. "But you are a humbug!" cried the Scarecrow. "Yes, my dear, I am. I was a balloon man in Omaha, and the wind carried me here. The people thought I was a great wizard, so I built this city and told them to wear green glasses." He gave the Scarecrow a head full of bran and pins, the Tin Woodman a silk heart, and the Lion a green drink. They were all happy at once, because they had always had what they asked for.
