The Wicked Witch of the West had one eye, but it was as strong as a telescope. She saw the friends coming and sent forty wolves, then forty crows, then black bees, but the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow killed them all. At last the Witch used her Golden Cap and called the Winged Monkeys. They dropped the Tin Woodman on the rocks and pulled the straw out of the Scarecrow. They carried Dorothy and the Lion to the castle. The Witch made Dorothy work in the kitchen. She wanted the silver shoes, and one day she made Dorothy fall and took one shoe. Dorothy was so angry that she took a bucket of water and threw it over the Witch. "See what you have done!" cried the Witch. "I shall melt away." And in a minute she was only a brown puddle on the floor.
