"One night I saw a white ape-like thing running across the grass, and I understood at last. Man had not remained one species. The rich had lived above in the sunlight, and the workers had lived below in the machine rooms, until they became two different creatures. Above were the Eloi, small and idle and pretty. Below were the Morlocks, white, blind in the day, and strong. I climbed down one of the wells with matches in my pocket, and I found meat in the dark, and I knew what meat it was. The Eloi were fed and clothed by the Morlocks as we feed cattle — and the Morlocks came up at night to take them. That was why the little people feared the moonless nights. My beautiful world was not a paradise. It was a farm. And my machine, I was certain, had been dragged into the hollow pedestal of the Sphinx by the same hands."
