"They gave me fruit and flowers, and I ate with them in a great hall. Then I went back to the lawn, and my Time Machine was gone. The marks of it went towards the White Sphinx, and the bronze doors in its pedestal were shut. I beat at them with my fists, and I shouted, and the little people looked at me as at a child in a rage. That night I slept badly. In the days that followed I learned a few words of their language, and I saved a small woman from drowning in the river. Her name was Weena, and after that she followed me everywhere. She was afraid of the dark, and so were all of them. They slept together in the great halls, and nobody would go out at night. I could not understand it at first. Then I began to see that there were wells in the ground, deep round shafts with the sound of machines far below, and that the darkness held something more than shadows."
