After dinner he came back with a small machine in his hands. It was made of shining metal, ivory and crystal, and it was hardly larger than a small clock. "This is only a model," he said. "It is my plan for a machine to travel through time. You will notice that it looks strangely unreal, and that one bar has a curious glitter, as if it were in some way not quite there." He put the model on a little table in the middle of the room. "Now, listen. This lever sends the machine into the future, and this one into the past. The Psychologist will press it himself, so that you cannot say I have tricked you." The Psychologist put out his finger and touched the lever. There was a breath of wind, the lamp flame jumped, and the model turned, grew misty, and was gone. The table was empty. Nobody spoke for a moment. Then the Medical Man leaned forward and looked under the table. "Is it in the future or the past?" he asked. "I do not know," said the Time Traveller.
