Mrs Medlock met Mary in London and took her north on the train. The moor was dark and wide, with no trees and no houses. Mary did not like it. The house had a hundred rooms, and almost all of them were locked. You must stay in your own rooms, said Mrs Medlock. Do not go wandering about. In the morning a young servant came in and opened the curtains. Her name was Martha, and she talked and talked. She told Mary to put on her own shoes and coat. Are you going to dress me? Mary asked. Martha laughed at her. Then go outside, she said, and play in the gardens. The wind is good for thin children. So Mary went out into the cold, because there was nothing else to do.
