The dominant primordial beast was strong in Buck, and it grew stronger under the hard life of the trail. Spitz felt that Buck was a dangerous rival, and Buck no longer hid his hatred. He openly protected the lazy dogs that Spitz wanted to punish, and the whole team began to lose its discipline. One night, when the dogs were chasing a rabbit along the frozen river, Spitz cut across a bend and caught it first. At once Buck was upon him. The fight had been coming for a long time, and they both knew that only one of them would live. Around them the other dogs waited in a silent circle, their eyes shining in the moonlight. Spitz was a practised fighter, but Buck fought with imagination as well as strength. At last he broke both of Spitz's front legs. The dark circle closed in, and Spitz was gone. Buck stood and looked on, the successful champion, the dominant primordial beast who had made his kill and found it good.
