The next morning François tried to put Sol-leks in the lead, but Buck drove him away and took his place. François got a club, and Buck backed off, but he would not accept any other position. At last the drivers gave in and laughed, and Buck took the place he had fought for. At once he proved himself a far better leader than Spitz. He punished the lazy, kept order, and made the whole team pull as one dog. They carried the government mail from Skagway to Dawson in record time. Then François and Perrault received new orders and went out of Buck's life forever. The team was sold to a Scotsman who carried the mail, and the trail began again, with heavy loads and endless snow. It was a hard, monotonous life. Old Dave became sick, but he would not leave his place in the traces. When he could no longer walk, the driver went back into the forest with a revolver. A shot rang out, and Buck and every dog knew what had happened.
