At midnight Tom and Huckleberry Finn carried a dead cat to the old graveyard to cure warts. They hid behind three elm trees and waited. Then voices came, and three men crossed the grass with a lantern: young Doctor Robinson, Muff Potter and Injun Joe. The men had come to dig up a grave. When the work was done, the doctor and Injun Joe began to quarrel over money. Potter flew at the doctor, and the doctor knocked him senseless with a heavy board. In that moment Injun Joe snatched Potter's knife and drove it into the doctor's breast. Then he put the knife into Potter's open hand and sat down to wait. When Potter came round, Injun Joe told him that he had done it himself, and Potter believed him and begged him never to tell.
