In spring Elizabeth visited her friend Charlotte, who had married Mr Collins and lived at Hunsford, beside the great park of Rosings. Lady Catherine asked about her age, her accomplishments, and the number of sisters out at once, and Elizabeth answered every question with civil composure. Mr Darcy was staying with his aunt. He called at the parsonage at odd hours and sat in silence. Then one evening he came in quickly and said that he had struggled in vain, that he admired and loved her, and that he had fought against her low connections and her family. Elizabeth had never been so angry. She told him that he was the last man in the world whom she could ever be prevailed on to marry. He left the room white with astonishment.
