James Hook was the only man the Sea-Cook feared. He had a hook of iron instead of a right hand, and he wore his hair in long black curls. He was never more sinister than when he was most polite. One thing alone frightened him: the crocodile that had eaten his hand and had followed him ever since, wanting the rest of him. Luckily the crocodile had also swallowed a clock, so Hook always heard it coming, tick, tick, tick. Hook hated Peter beyond everything, because it was Peter who had thrown the arm to the crocodile. He made a plan. He would take a rich damp cake to the house under the ground and leave it there, and the children with no mother would eat it and die.
