Pip was the smallest of the crew, a black boy from Alabama who played the tambourine and was loved by everyone for his brightness. One day he was put in a whaleboat in place of a sick sailor. When the harpoon struck, the whale gave a jerk, and Pip leaped overboard in terror and was tangled in the line. The second mate cut him free and told him that a whale would sell for thirty times what he would sell for in Alabama. The next time Pip leaped again, and this time the boat went on after the whale and left him. He floated alone in the middle of the ocean for hours, with the sea stretching to the sky on every side. By the merest chance the ship picked him up at last, but from that hour the little black boy went about the deck an idiot. The sea had jeeringly kept his finite body up, but drowned the infinite of his soul. Ahab took him into his own cabin and would not let him go.
