They reached Liverpool at twenty minutes to twelve on the twenty-first of December. Fogg had nine hours to get to London, and London was six hours away. He had won. Then Fix put his hand on his shoulder. "You are Phileas Fogg?" "I am." "I arrest you in the Queen's name." Fogg was taken to the custom house and locked in a room. He sat there without moving, watching the clock. At two minutes to three the door opened and Fix came in, pale and out of breath. "Sir," he said, "forgive me. The real thief was arrested three days ago. You are free." Fogg knocked him down with one blow, then went out and took a special train to London. But the train was slow, and he came to his house at ten minutes to nine in the evening — five minutes after the end of the eighty days. Phileas Fogg had gone round the world and had lost his bet by five minutes.
