Under a tree in front of the house a table was laid for a great many people, but only three were there: the March Hare, the Hatter, and a Dormouse fast asleep between them. "No room! No room!" they cried when Alice sat down. The Hatter told her that her hair wanted cutting, which was very rude. He asked her a riddle with no answer, and he showed her his watch, which told the day of the month but not the time. His watch had stopped at six o'clock, and so it was always tea-time and they never had time to wash the cups. The Dormouse began a story about three little sisters who lived at the bottom of a well, but the others kept interrupting. At last they tried to put the Dormouse into the teapot. Alice got up in disgust and walked away, and nobody called her back.
