The rabbit thought Alice was his servant and sent her into his house to fetch his gloves. Inside she drank from another bottle and grew so large that she filled the whole room. The rabbit and his friends threw stones at the window until she ate a cake and became small again. Out in the wood she met a large blue caterpillar sitting on a mushroom and smoking a pipe. "Who are you?" it asked. Alice answered that she hardly knew, because she had changed size so many times that morning. The caterpillar told her to repeat a poem, and every line came out wrong. Then it crawled away, but it said one useful thing first: one side of the mushroom would make her taller and the other side would make her shorter. Alice took a piece in each hand and nibbled them carefully until she was her right size again.
