One November evening the two of them ran down to the Grange to laugh at the Linton children through the window. A bulldog seized Catherine by the ankle, and the Lintons took her in and kept her five weeks while the wound healed. She came back on a black pony, wearing a feathered beaver and a fine habit, and she had to hold up her skirts to get down. Heathcliff came in from the fields to greet her and she laughed at his dirty hands. He would not touch her, and he went out, and he did not speak for a day. After that Edgar Linton called often, and Catherine kept two faces, one for the parlour and one for the kitchen. Nelly warned her that she could not have both worlds. Catherine said she could, and that nobody had ever asked her to choose.
