Dorothy lived on the great grey prairie in Kansas with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Their house had one room, and it stood alone in the middle of the flat land. Dorothy had a little black dog called Toto, and Toto made her laugh. One day the sky grew very dark. Uncle Henry looked at the grass and said, "There is a cyclone coming." Aunt Em ran to the cellar and called to Dorothy. But Toto jumped out of Dorothy's arms and hid under the bed. When Dorothy caught him, it was too late. The house turned around two or three times and rose slowly into the air. The wind carried it for many hours. At last Dorothy lay down on her bed, and Toto lay beside her, and she went to sleep.
