Dickon and Mary carried Colin out in his wheeled chair, down the walks and in at the door in the wall. Colin saw the garden for the first time and said nothing for a long while. I shall get well, he said at last, and I shall live for ever and ever. All through the spring they worked. They pulled the weeds, and they cut the dead wood, and the roses came out over the walls in white and pink. Colin stood up on his own two feet and found that his legs were straight. They kept the secret all summer, because he wanted to show his father himself. Mr Craven was travelling in Italy when he dreamed of his wife's voice calling from the garden. He came home, walked round the wall, and heard children laughing inside. The door flew open, and a tall boy ran straight into his arms.
