One wet night Mary followed the crying down the dark corridors and opened a door. A boy lay in a great carved bed, with a white face and grey eyes too big for it. Who are you? he said. Are you a ghost? His name was Colin, and he was Mr Craven's son, and he had never been outside. Everyone told him he would die young and grow a crooked back, so he screamed at the servants and nobody said no to him. Mary was the first person who ever argued with him. You are not going to die, she said. You only think about it all day. Colin stared at her, and then he laughed. After that she came every day and told him about the robin, and Dickon, and the green points coming up. She did not tell him where the garden was, not yet.
