Every day Mary went out on the moor paths and the long walks. The wind made her hungry, and she began to eat her porridge. Her cheeks turned pink and her thin arms grew stronger. The robin followed her from tree to tree and watched her with bright black eyes. One morning a dog had dug a hole in the earth by the old wall. Mary looked into it and saw something round and rusty. It was an iron key. She put it in her pocket and carried it about for days. If it is the key of the closed garden, she thought, I could find the door. Then a gust of wind moved the ivy on the wall, and Mary saw a square of dark wood behind the green leaves.
