In the village a woman named Messua took Mowgli into her house. She had lost her own son to a tiger many years before. Maybe you are my son, she said, and she gave him milk and bread. Mowgli learned to wear clothes and to speak the language of men. The village gave him the buffaloes to look after in the fields. One day Grey Brother, his wolf brother, came to him. Shere Khan is coming to kill you, he said. Mowgli made a plan. The wolves drove the buffaloes into a narrow valley from both ends. Shere Khan was asleep there after his dinner. The great herd ran over him, and he did not get up again. Mowgli took the tiger's skin to the Council Rock and put it on the rock. Look well, O Wolves, he called. Have I kept my word? The wolves howled, and they wanted him to be their leader. But Mowgli said no. Now I will hunt alone in the jungle, he said.
