The monkeys took Mowgli to the Cold Lairs, an old city of stone in the jungle. Nobody lived there now, only the Monkey People. They danced and sang and threw nuts, and Mowgli was hungry and tired. Baloo and Bagheera were afraid for him. The monkeys are only afraid of one animal, said Bagheera. They are afraid of Kaa, the great rock snake. So they went to Kaa, and Kaa came with them. That night Bagheera and Baloo fought many monkeys on the walls of the old city. Then Kaa came, and the monkeys ran away when they saw him.
