Just as the Swallow was going to sleep, a large drop of water fell on him. "How strange!" he cried. "There is not a cloud in the sky." Then another drop fell. He looked up and saw the eyes of the Happy Prince. They were full of tears. The Swallow was filled with pity. "Who are you?" he said. "I am the Happy Prince." "Why are you weeping then?" asked the Swallow. "When I was alive, I did not know what tears were. I lived in the palace where sorrow is not allowed. My friends called me the Happy Prince. Now I am dead, and they have set me up so high. I can see all the ugliness and all the misery of my city. My heart is made of lead, yet I cannot help weeping." The Swallow listened with a heavy heart. He had never heard such sad words before. A long silence fell between them.
