The Fall of the House of Usher

8 — The Fall
"Not hear it? Yes, I hear it, and have heard it. Long, long, many minutes, many hours, many days have I heard it, yet I dared not speak. We have put her living in the tomb! I tell you that I heard her feeble movements in the coffin. And now tonight, Ethelred, ha! ha! the rending of the hermit's door, and the death-cry of the dragon, say rather the breaking of her coffin and the grating of the iron hinges of her prison. Madman, I tell you that she now stands without the door!" The huge antique panels threw slowly back their ponderous jaws, and there stood the lady Madeline of Usher. She fell heavily inward upon her brother, and bore him to the floor a corpse. I fled from that chamber and from that mansion. The storm was still abroad, and the whole orb of the blood-red moon shone through the widening fissure in the front of the house. While I gazed, the walls rushed asunder, and the deep tarn closed sullenly over the fragments of the House of Usher.
