Buck sat all day by the pool. He had killed man, the noblest game of all, and he no longer feared him without his club and arrows. That night the wolf pack came into the valley. The boldest wolf attacked, and Buck broke his neck in an instant. For half an hour the pack fought him, and then they stopped. His wild brother came forward and touched his nose, and the old wolves sat down and howled at the moon. Buck sat down and howled too. When the pack ran into the forest, Buck ran with them, side by side with his wild brother. Years later the Yeehats began to speak of a Ghost Dog that ran at the head of the pack. Each summer he comes to the valley and howls there alone. But when the long winter nights come, he may be seen running at the head of the pack, singing a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack.
