At the summer picnic Tom and Becky went into McDougal's cave with the others and then wandered away down a side passage. Their last candle went out. For three days and nights they were lost in the dark. Becky grew weak, and Tom went on exploring the passages with a kite line tied to a rock. In one of them he saw a hand holding a candle come round a corner, and the hand belonged to Injun Joe, who ran away without knowing him. At last Tom saw a speck of daylight and pushed his head through a small hole above the river. The villagers found the children and brought them home. Two weeks later the cave door was closed with iron, and Injun Joe was found dead behind it. Under a cross in the cave Tom and Huck dug up a box with twelve thousand dollars in gold.
