The trial came in the summer. Everybody believed Muff Potter was guilty, and Potter's lawyer said almost nothing, so that people thought he had given the case up. Then he called a witness: "Thomas Sawyer!" Tom took the stand with his knees shaking. He told the court about the dead cat and the graveyard, and the whole room held its breath. "And when Doctor Robinson fetched Potter a blow with the board, Injun Joe jumped with the knife and —" Crash! Injun Joe sprang for a window, tore through it and was gone. Tom was a glittering hero again, but his nights were full of terror, and Huck's were too, for Injun Joe was still somewhere in the world. The reward money was never claimed, and no lawyer ever caught the half-breed.
