Angel came back from Brazil ill and aged, having learned to judge by deeds and not by names. He found Tess at last in Sandbourne, a fashionable seaside town, living in a lodging-house with Alec, dressed in a cashmere gown. It is too late, she said. He had come back to me, she said of Alec, and you did not come. Angel went away. An hour later Tess ran after him across the fields, and the landlady found a red spot spreading on the ceiling below Alec's room. Tess had killed him. For five days Angel and Tess walked north through the New Forest, and they were happy. On the last night they came to Stonehenge and she lay down on an altar stone and slept. At dawn the police stood round them in a circle. It is as it should be, she said. I am ready. Justice was done, and the President of the Immortals had ended his sport with Tess.
