Many years later I was on a ship to Africa. Near South America another storm came. It was the worst storm of my life. For twelve days the wind took the ship where it wanted. Then the ship hit the sand, and a great wave came over it. We got into a little boat, but the sea turned it over. I was in the water. The waves threw me on to the land again and again. At last I held on to a rock, and then I ran up the beach. I was alive. I looked for the other men, but I saw only three hats and two shoes. Everyone was dead but me. That night I slept in a tree, because I was afraid of wild animals.
