All children, except one, grow up. Wendy Darling learned this when she was two years old. The Darlings lived at number 14, and their nurse was a large Newfoundland dog called Nana. Mrs Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds at night. "Who is he, my pet?" she asked. "He is Peter Pan, mother. He comes to the nursery when we are asleep, and he plays on his pipes." One night the window blew open and a boy dropped in. Nana snapped at him as he leapt back, and the window came down and caught his shadow. Mrs Darling rolled the shadow up and put it away in a drawer. Peter came back for it a week later, and he sat on the floor and cried because he could not stick it on.
