Frankenstein

8 — The Pursuit North
Elizabeth lay dead across the bed, and at the window I saw him point at her and grin. My father died of the blow within days. From that hour I had nothing left but revenge, and I have followed him over Europe and Russia and out onto this ice, living on the traces he leaves for me, because he wants the chase to go on. He leaves food sometimes. That is the worst of it. Seek happiness in quiet, Mr Walton, and avoid ambition, even the apparently innocent ambition of distinguishing yourself in science and discovery. Walton adds that Victor died aboard the ship, and that in the night the creature came to the cabin, wept over him, said that his own destruction was all that remained, and sprang from the window onto the ice raft and was lost in darkness and distance.
