They were too late for Lucy, but not for the rest. Van Helsing gathered them all: Seward, Arthur, Quincey Morris, Harker and Mina. Harker's diary from the castle, which everyone had thought a fever dream, was now read aloud and believed. They began to hunt the boxes of earth through London. But one night, while the men were away, Seward heard a low sound in Mina's room. He broke in with the others. Jonathan lay senseless on the bed, and beside him the Count held Mina with one hand and pressed her mouth to a cut on his own breast, forcing her to drink. He turned on them with red eyes, and vanished in a mist. Van Helsing laid a piece of the Host on Mina's forehead, and it burned into her skin like white-hot metal. "Unclean!" she cried, and put her hands over her face. "Not while he lives," said Van Helsing quietly. "That is why we must kill him."
