Mr Utterson the lawyer was a man of rough face, cold and dry in speech, but somehow lovable. On Sundays he walked with his distant relative, Mr Enfield. One day their walk took them down a busy little street, where a certain building thrust forward a blind, ugly front. There was no bell or knocker on the door, and no window anywhere. "Did you ever notice that door?" asked Enfield. "It is connected in my mind with a very strange story. I was coming home about three in the black winter morning, when I saw two figures: a small man who was walking fast, and a girl of eight or ten who was running down a cross street. Well, the two ran into one another at the corner. And then came the horrible part of the thing: the man calmly walked over the child's body and left her screaming on the ground. It sounds nothing to hear, but it was hellish to see. He was not like a man; he was like some damned monster."
