At Suez a small, sharp-eyed man was watching every passenger who came ashore. His name was Fix, and he was a police detective. He had a description of the bank robber in his pocket, and when he saw Phileas Fogg the description fitted him exactly. Fix sent a telegram to London and asked for a warrant of arrest. Then he followed. He was friendly to Passepartout and asked him many questions, and the honest Frenchman told him everything without suspecting anything. "He is certainly my man," Fix said to himself. "He left London the day after the robbery, and he carries a bag full of banknotes. This journey round the world is only a way of running away." But the warrant did not come. It travelled after them from port to port, always too late, and Fix had to follow Fogg across half the earth, growing angrier and more certain every day, unable to lay a hand on him until they reached English ground again.
