Alice was sitting by the river with her sister, and the book her sister was reading had no pictures in it. Then a white rabbit ran past her. It wore a waistcoat, it carried a watch, and it said, "Oh dear! I shall be late!" Alice jumped up and ran after it across the field. The rabbit went down a large hole under the hedge, and Alice went down after him. The hole was a very deep well. She fell slowly past cupboards and maps, and she had time to wonder how far she had fallen. At the bottom she came into a long hall with locked doors all round it. On a glass table lay a tiny golden key. The key opened a little door behind a curtain, and beyond it lay the loveliest garden Alice had ever seen. But the door was only fifteen inches high.
