The last spirit came in black, and pointed but did not speak. It showed Scrooge a group of businessmen laughing about a dead man's funeral, which no one would attend unless lunch was provided. It showed him a dirty shop where a charwoman sold the bed curtains, the blankets and the shirt taken from a corpse. It showed him the Cratchits' house, silent, and Bob going upstairs to a little room where a child lay. And at last it led him into a churchyard and pointed to a neglected grave. Scrooge crept towards it, trembling, and read upon the stone his own name: EBENEZER SCROOGE. "Spirit!" he cried, holding to its robe. "Hear me! I am not the man I was. Why show me this if I am past all hope? Tell me that I may change these shadows by an altered life!" The hand shook. "I will keep Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."
