The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

2 — In the Town
The two mice walked for a long time. At last they came to the town and went into a great house. It belonged to a rich family. The town mouse led her cousin into a fine dining room. On the big table there was the end of a great dinner. The country mouse had never seen so much food in her life. There was sweet cake and soft white bread. There was cheese and meat and red fruit. "You see?" said the town mouse proudly. "This is how I live every day. Sit down and eat all you want." The country mouse climbed onto the table. She could not believe her eyes. She began to eat the sweet cake, and it was wonderful. "Try the cheese and fruit too," said the town mouse. But just then the door opened with a loud noise. Two big dogs ran into the room, barking loudly. The two mice jumped down from the table at once. They ran as fast as they could and hid in a small dark hole in the wall. The country mouse was shaking with fear. Her heart beat fast and she could hardly breathe. After a while the dogs went away, and everything was quiet again. "Do not be afraid," said the town mouse. "They have gone now. Come, let us finish our meal." So they went back to the table. But just as they started to eat again, a servant came into the room. The mice had to run and hide a second time. The country mouse did not want any more. "Goodbye, my cousin," she said. "Your house is fine and your food is rich, but you eat in fear all the time. I would rather eat plain beans and dry bread in peace than have this grand feast in fear." And with that, the country mouse went home to her quiet field, and she was happy there. A simple life in peace is better than a rich life in fear.
