On Election Day the minister preached the greatest sermon of his life, and the people said that an angel had spoken. But as the procession passed the market-place, he turned aside, pale as death, and climbed the scaffold. Hester, come hither, he said. Come, my little Pearl. Chillingworth pushed through the crowd and caught his arm. Madman, hold! he whispered. There is yet a way to escape. But the minister tore open his ministerial band, and for one moment the multitude saw the scarlet letter burnt into his own breast. He fell upon the scaffold, and Pearl kissed his lips. Within the same year Roger Chillingworth withered away, for he had no more evil to do. Hester and Pearl went to Europe, but many years later Hester came back alone to the little cottage and took up the scarlet letter again of her own free will. When she died she was buried beside the minister, and one tombstone served for both, bearing this device: ON A FIELD, SABLE, THE LETTER A, GULES.
