The King and Queen of Hearts sat on their throne, the whole pack of cards stood round, and the Knave was in chains before them. The White Rabbit read the charge: the Knave had stolen the Queen's tarts. The first witness was the Hatter, who came in with a teacup in one hand and bread and butter in the other and said almost nothing. The cook was called next, and threw pepper about. Then the White Rabbit read out the name "Alice!" Alice stood up, and found that she had been growing again, tall enough to upset the jury box with her skirt. "Sentence first, verdict afterwards," said the Queen. "Off with her head!" "Who cares for you?" said Alice, who was now full size. The whole pack rose into the air and came flying down at her, and Alice woke on the bank with her sister brushing dead leaves off her face.
